Journey to the Laguna del Otun - Nevado Santa Isabel

Description:

Estimated duration: 3 days for only the Nevado or Laguna; 4 days for both.- Difficulty: medium – high. An excellent level of fitness is required.

Day 1: -Estimated time travelling by Willys jeep/all-terrain vehicle: 4 hours. We travel from Pereira to Hacienda Potosí by Willys jeep or all-terrain 4x4 vehicle, leaving at 8:00 a.m. and arriving at approximately 12:00 p.m. During this trip we will observe how the landscape and climate change drastically as we ascend from 1,400 to 3,550 metres above sea level. On this day we will focus on acclimatisation and physical conditioning, and in the afternoon we will go on a gentle walk and complete some warm-up, stretching and breathing exercises to prepare our bodies gradually and thereby have a successful ascent the following day.

Day 2: - Estimated time travelling by Willys jeep/all-terrain vehicle: 2.5 hours.- Estimated walking time: 6 hours. On this day our fears, abilities and desires to ascend will be put to the test.

At 5:00 a.m. we leave in a Willys jeep or all-terrain vehicle and make our way to the start of the “Conejeras” path. This journey takes approximately one hour as we drive over the mountainous slopes of Parque de los Nevados. We continue our adventure at 4,150 m.a.s.l. with a good stretch and warm-up and we get our trekking equipment ready. We then begin the ascent through a beautiful wood full of Frailejones (an Andean type of shrub), small pools of water, water wells and endemic vegetation unique to a moorland ecosystem. With luck we will be able to see some wild rabbits and small deer, as well as beautiful birds. During the trip we will make a few technical stops to monitor the physical and emotional state of the adventurers, and to drink some water and eat something for energy.

We can take plenty of photos and really take our time to contemplate our surroundings, as we are in no rush, and our only goal is to have a good time. After three hours immersed in the beautiful moorland landscape, we arrive at the snow-covered part of the mountain (4,680 m.a.s.l.) If the weather, safety conditions and Mother Earth allow it, we will walk along the glaciar, relishing every moment of this gratifying achievement. Around midday we make our way back down to the point where we began our adventure, from which the Willys jeep/all-terrain vehicle will take us back to our humble accommodation so we can have a well-earned rest.

Day 3: - Estimated walking time: 7 hours. Today our adventure starts at 6:00 a.m.. We will go on a trip where we are surrounded by great mountains on all sides and are treated to an incomparable view of a large part of the Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevados. Weather permitting, we will be able to make out the Nevado del Ruiz, Paramillo de Santa Rosa, Nevado de Santa Isabel and Paramillo del Quindío in the distance, and well as having a closer view of the magnificent Laguna del Otún.

Day 4: - Estimated time travelling by Willys jeep/all-terrain vehicle: 3.5 hours. Today will be a restful day, for chatting to our fellow adventurers and getting to know each other a bit more. We will spend time amongst the locals to learn more about work in the fields, the crops grown in the area and their daily life. In the afternoon, after a good lunch, we will begin our descent back down in our Willys jeep/all-terrain vehicle, arriving in the city of Pereira around 5:00 p.m.

Description:

Estimated duration: 3 days for either the Nevado or the Paramillo; 4 days for both.- Difficulty: medium/high. An excellent level of fitness is required.

Day 1: - Estimated walking time: 9 hours. We leave very early in the morning and head to Valle de Cocora (1,900 m.a.s.l.). From there, we begin our trek to the finca La Primavera (3,700 m.a.s.l.). This will be an exciting trip which requires a lot of effort and allows us to immerse ourselves in nature. We will go through spectacular nature reserves such as Acaime and Estrella de Agua, until we get to the Plains of Romerales, and from there the finca where we will stay. The wind, mud and altitude are some of the elements we must face but which will prepare us for the adventure to take place on the days that follow.

Day 2: - Estimated walking time: 6 hours. Today will be a restful day. We will trek over much gentler land until we get to the beautiful and magnificent wetlands and marshes of the Paramillo del Quindío, where the river of the same name has its source, and whose natural sanctuary allows us to contemplate the magic that is the creation of water. Great frailejones (an Andean type of shrub), waterbeds and some moorland ducks welcome us to this magical place.

Day 3: - Estimated walking time: 10 hours. Our fears, abilities and desires to go further than we previously thought possible will be put to the test. At 4:00 a.m. we begin the ascent to the Nevado del Tolima (snow-covered part of the mountain at 5,000 m.a.s.l.), walking amidst a great wood of frailejones, small water wells and endemic vegetation unique to a moorland ecosystem. With luck we will be able to see some wild rabbits and small deer, as well as beautiful birds. On this day our adrenaline levels will be at their highest.

During our trip we will make a few technical stops to monitor the physical and emotional state of our adventurers, and to drink some water and eat something for energy. We can take plenty of photos as we are in no rush, and we will take our time to really contemplate everything around us. Our only goal is to have a good time.

Day 4: - Estimated walking time: 7 hours. Today is descent day. We will make our way back with a special sense of satisfaction, that which can only be felt in the mountains, in the direct presence of the vastness and grandeur of Mother Nature. It will take us approximately 7 hours to get back to civilization, after which we will be left with the memories of our intimate 4-day journey.
