Estimated duration: 3 days for either the Nevado or the Paramillo; 4 days for both.- Difficulty: medium/high. An excellent level of fitness is required.
Day 1: - Estimated walking time: 9 hours. We leave very early in the morning and head to Valle de Cocora (1,900 m.a.s.l.). From there, we begin our trek to the finca La Primavera (3,700 m.a.s.l.). This will be an exciting trip which requires a lot of effort and allows us to immerse ourselves in nature. We will go through spectacular nature reserves such as Acaime and Estrella de Agua, until we get to the Plains of Romerales, and from there the finca where we will stay. The wind, mud and altitude are some of the elements we must face but which will prepare us for the adventure to take place on the days that follow.
Day 2: - Estimated walking time: 6 hours. Today will be a restful day. We will trek over much gentler land until we get to the beautiful and magnificent wetlands and marshes of the Paramillo del Quindío, where the river of the same name has its source, and whose natural sanctuary allows us to contemplate the magic that is the creation of water. Great frailejones (an Andean type of shrub), waterbeds and some moorland ducks welcome us to this magical place.
Day 3: - Estimated walking time: 10 hours. Our fears, abilities and desires to go further than we previously thought possible will be put to the test. At 4:00 a.m. we begin the ascent to the Nevado del Tolima (snow-covered part of the mountain at 5,000 m.a.s.l.), walking amidst a great wood of frailejones, small water wells and endemic vegetation unique to a moorland ecosystem. With luck we will be able to see some wild rabbits and small deer, as well as beautiful birds. On this day our adrenaline levels will be at their highest.
During our trip we will make a few technical stops to monitor the physical and emotional state of our adventurers, and to drink some water and eat something for energy. We can take plenty of photos as we are in no rush, and we will take our time to really contemplate everything around us. Our only goal is to have a good time.
Day 4: - Estimated walking time: 7 hours. Today is descent day. We will make our way back with a special sense of satisfaction, that which can only be felt in the mountains, in the direct presence of the vastness and grandeur of Mother Nature. It will take us approximately 7 hours to get back to civilization, after which we will be left with the memories of our intimate 4-day journey.
